Designed in only one night by Gérald Genta, the first Royal Oak model ref. 5402 was presented in 1972 at the Basel Fair and went on to become one of the most iconic - if not the most iconic - designs ever created in the world of watches and elevated steel sports watches to a new status.

Due to the rich history and outstanding position in the history of watchmaking, these watches remain to be one of the most sought after watches on the market to this day.

In 1977, with the introduction of the 5402BA , the Royal Oak was made available for the first time ever in precious metals as in the years prior the customers of Audemars Piguet still demanded luxury sport watches also in precious materials.

In total there have been only 736 units ever to be produced in yellow gold between the years of 1977 and 1990.
